Securing the Knowledge Foundations of Innovation
openeconomics.net on

Excerpt: Last month, Paul David, professor of Economics at Stanford University, Senior Fellow of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) and a member of the Advisory Panel delivered a keynote presentation at the International Seminar of the PROPICE in Paris. Professor David expresses concern that the increased use of intellectual property rights (IPR) protections “has posed problems for open collaborative scientific research” and that the IPR regime has been used by businesses e. g. to “raise commercial rivals’ costs”, where empirical evidence shows has shown that business innovation is “is being inhibited by patent thickets”.... read the full post.

Open Knowledge: much more than open data
feedproxy.google.com on

Excerpt: We’ve often used “open knowledge” simply as a broad term to cover any kind of open data or content from statistics to sonnets, and more. However, there is another deeper, and far more important, reason why we are the “Open Knowledge” Foundation and not, for example, the “Open Data” Foundation. It’s because knowledge is something much more than data. Open knowledge is what open data becomes when it’s useful, usable and used. At the Open Knowledge Foundation we believe in open knowledge: not just that data is open and can be freely used, but that it is made useful – accessible, understandable, meaningful, and able to help someone solve a real problem.... read the full post.

The Wikidata revolution is here: enabling structured data on Wikipedia
blog.wikimedia.org on

Excerpt: A year after its announcement as the first new Wikimedia project since 2006, Wikidata has now begun to serve the over 280 language versions of Wikipedia as a common source of structured data that can be used in more than 25 million articles of the free encyclopedia. By providing Wikipedia editors with a central venue for their efforts to collect and vet such data, Wikidata leads to a higher level of consistency and quality in Wikipedia articles across the many language editions of the encyclopedia. Beyond Wikipedia, Wikidata’s universal, machine-readable knowledge database will be freely reusable by anyone, enabling numerous external applications.... read the full post.

Talking about crime: The Chicago Crime site
blog.apps.chicagotribune.com on

Excerpt: Welcome to what we hope will be an ongoing series of blog posts by members of the apps team about our work analyzing and visualizing data related to public safety and crime. Crime is an important and popular subject. But interpreting crime data is tricky business, and developing coherent narratives and useful metrics is even harder. Last fall, Heather Billings, David Eads and Joe Germuska built the first version of a comprehensive crime site for the Chicago Tribune called Chicago Crime. Our goal is to provide the best online tools and reporting on crime and public safety for our readers.... read the full post.

At Capital One, Open APIs Aren’t Really Open
bankinnovation.net on

Excerpt: While an API is a protocol that allows software platforms to communicate with each other, Cap One’s APIs — there are four — are a heck of lot less open than most. In fact, they are not open at all. Bank Innovation has learned that Capital One’s APIs, which are administered by the bank’s Capital One Labs unit, are “very limited” to “partners at this time that can help [Capital One] achieve our short-term strategic goals. ” Those potential partners are only those ventures “in pretty specific verticals that have the scale to reach a large number of our customers. ” That’s a pretty small list, in our view — if there is even a list at all.... read the full post.

Crisis Mapping, Neogeography and the Delusion of Democratization | iRevolution
irevolution.net on

Excerpt: Professor Muki Haklay kindly shared with me this superb new study in which he questions the alleged democratization effects of Neogeography. As my colleague Andrew Turner explained in 2006, “Neogeography means ‘new geography’ and consists of a set of techniques and tools that fall outside the realm of traditional GIS, Geographic Information Systems. [. ] Essentially, Neogeography is about people using and creating their own maps, on their own terms and by combining elements of an existing toolset. Neogeography is about sharing location information with friends & visitors, helping shape context, and conveying under-standing through knowledge of place.... read the full post.

Document Freedom Day 2013 | Open Knowledge Foundation Blog
blog.okfn.org on

Excerpt: Have you ever been stuck with some data that you have not been able to open because it was in a format that needs some specific kind of software to open it? The same thing happens tens of thousands of times each day. Can you imagine how much knowledge exchange doesn’t happen just because sender and receiver (intentionally or not) are using different data formats? Can you imagine how much knowledge future generations will lose if we keep on using proprietary, closed data formats that one day no one will ever be able to open because the company behind it had business secrets and patents on it but then went bankrupt?... read the full post.
