iOS and Android Design Guidelines Cheat Sheet
kinveyposts.wordpress.com on

Excerpt: When making an app, following your platform’s design guidelines is a tried-and-true way to increase metrics like user retention and customer satisfaction.  It makes it easier for your users to learn how to use the application to the fullest extent, as quickly and intuitively as possible.  In order to make designing for your target platforms easier, we made a cheat sheet for both iOS and Android Human Interface Guidelines (HIGs). It gives a high level summary of the User Interface, how to support multiple screen sizes, icon sizes, and touch gestures so that you don’t have to dig through the books to find them every time you need them.  It also allows you to see the subtle differences between the platforms.... read the full post.

Amazon now has its own cloud-based offering for iOS: Amazon Cloud Drive Photos. It was released on the iOS App Store on Thursday. Apple’s issues with mobile photos and cloud storage were brought to light this week with a great post from an app developer, Peter Nixey. www.zdnet.com on

Excerpt: iOS 6 granted FIPS 140-2 certification. (Image: CNET)Apple's iOS 6 mobile operating system is now secure enough for low-level work in the U. S. government after it passed security certification. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which examines and tests mobile devices for security and validation purposes, granted the Apple mobile platform FIPS 140-2 certification (Level 1) last Friday. At this level, devices running the platform can be used in conjunction with the lowest level of security clearance. It comes just days after the U. S. Department of Defense was reportedly in talks with Apple and Samsung in a bid to approve the two firms' devices for government use.... read the full post.

Android and iOS Mobile Device Development with Azure Mobile Services using HTML5 and JavaScript
www.codeproject.com on

Excerpt: In this tutorial I’m going to show you how you can build a cross-platform mobile app with Azure Mobile Services using HTML5 and JavaScript. I'll be using the following sample code: I’m going to adapt the sample todo app that’s part of the Get started with Mobile Services tutorial. You’ll notice that there are already tutorials for iOS, Android and Windows Phone 8 but the problem with these, excluding WP8, is that you need to use an environment other than Visual Studio. This might be OK if you’re already familiar with Java, Objective C, Eclipse, and XCode, but is obviously less than ideal if you’re not. Never fear though: if your background is almost any flavour of.... read the full post.

Don’t Reinvent the Wheel: Working with iOS Core and Open Source Frameworks
blog.engineyard.com on

Excerpt: “We’re different! ” This is a mantra many organizations will trot out to justify striking out on their own path with some new technology, design, or process. And sometimes it’s true. But the question they need to ask next is, “Are we so different as to justify two to four times as much work, a delay in getting to market, and increased maintenance costs for the indefinite future? ” Nowhere is this more apparent than the app ecosystem of the mobile computing world. You can’t blame a developer or organization for wanting to be unique, because having a user interface/experience that stands out could be the differentiator between getting your app featured and making a profit or ending up in the scrap heap of apps.... read the full post.
