Asking Questions of Data – Garment Factories Data Expedition
schoolofdata.org on

Excerpt: As preparation for the upcoming data expedition on Mapping the garment factories this weekend, several intrepid explorers have been collating data from brand supplier lists that identify the location of over 3,000 factories to date. The data is being published via a Google Spreadsheet, which means we can also treat it as a database, asking database like queries either within the spreadsheet itself, or via a webservice. The School of Data blogpost Asking Questions of Data – Some Simple One-Liners introduced the idea of using SQL – the Structured Query Language – to ask questions of a dataset contained in a small database populated with data that had been “liberated” using Scraperwiki.... read the full post.

Startups and the Art of Storytelling
www.markevanstech.com on

Excerpt: There are a couple of reasons why this is the case. First, good stories are interesting, attractive and compelling. Second, brands will need to become better storytellers as content marketing becomes table stakes. When everyone’s telling stories, you need to be better at it to rise above the crowd – something we’re seeing in social media. So, how do brands tell good stories? It starts by being customer-centric, which means looking at what the customer wants to read, listen and watch as opposed to what a brands want to tell them. It’s a slightly differently perspective but surprisingly difficult for many brands who think that consumers like it when they babble on about features.... read the full post.

Visual Storytelling Guide
mod-lab.com on

Excerpt: We have all heard and understand that the most important thing a nonprofit organization can do is tell a meaningful story. We also know images can be a powerful part of that story. However, have you considered how the increasing role of images within our daily lives is affecting that relationship. The Visual Storytelling Guide from Resource Media help put it into perspective for me. “Ten percent of all photographs in the history of photography were made last year” Multi-media social platforms like Facebook and Instagram along with the incredible advancements in cell phone camera technology have made images a constant and steady part of our daily communication.... read the full post.

Seattle Hacks – Using Github Pages and Jekyll To Finally Create The Noiseless Hacker Calendar
www.twilio.com on

Excerpt: These are questions asked by developers and should be answered by developers. So some friends and I got together and created Seattle Hacks, an open source, community powered event calendar and information resource for developers in Seattle. However, there was a massive problem with using an off-the-shelf CMS, blog or wiki tool that I was worried about: SPAM. Every time someone tries to make a dev calendar, it gets completely overrun with recruiters, pay-to-play events, and other crap hackers could care less about. Any site that allows the general public to make contributions will attract spam at a rate that is proportional to that site’s influence and traffic. You can moderate content, but that doesn’t scale well as the site grows.... read the full post.

Bringing to Life an Open Source Software Project via Github & Jekyll – Part 1
www.cloudave.com on

Excerpt: It’s time for another blog series! This is a series I’m starting to outline that crazy complex site I’m building to prove out all sorts of things, all located at http://adron. me. So far it’s just a site that hold portfolio information for my coding, biking and related information about me. However I’m using this as a base template, that anybody can use via the github repo I’ve created simply titled Me, to start and scale their own personal site. But beyond that, I’ll be using practices and technology that can be used to truly scale large sites with lots of users. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions about this series please ping me on Twitter @adron or leave a comment on this blog itself.... read the full post.

Building a Docs Site with Jekyll + GitHub Pages | Jetstrap Blog
blog.jetstrap.com on

Excerpt: Today we are happy to announce the very first version of our Jetstrap Documentation site running on GitHub Pages using Jekyll as the site generator. If you don’t know about us, Jetstrap makes it super easy to build  Twitter Bootstrap interfaces and designs (try it, it’s free). Since our tool has a lot of little features, we’ve had a lot of requests for better documentation and tutorials. I wanted to build something that was easy to maintain, “open” so others could collaborate and submit content, and fast. GitHub Pages is perfect for that. Getting started with GitHub pages is always a bit of a pain. I forget how to push content to it, what URL to access the site with, how to set up a CNAME so we can use docs. jetstrap.... read the full post.

Write, And Let The World Revise Your Work With Prose.io For GitHub
www.makeuseof.com on

Excerpt: Traditionally, writing is a solitary affair. It’s just you and the screen, or a piece of paper. Man versus text in a battle of wills, wits, and emotion, until suddenly – you’re done. Now it’s time to show the world, to put your text out there and watch what happens. But in these digital times, that’s not the only way to go about writing. What if it was all out in the open, all along? What if the world could see your revisions and follow along, making suggestions? On the face of it, this may seem like a horrible idea – but for some kinds of texts (and for certain writers), such open collaboration may be a boon.... read the full post.
