Excerpt: The Open Compute Project (OCP) - started two years ago by Facebook to promote open-source hardware solutions for data centers - announced on Wednesday that it has started a new project to develop a specification and "reference box" for a "open" networking switch. (See also Facebook's Group Hug Frees The Microprocessor From The Motherboard. )
The project will be led by Najam Ahmad, who runs the network engineering team at Facebook, and high-profile companies including Intel, VMware and Broadcom - among others - have already signed on to participate.

eBay Joining Google, Facebook, and Amazon in Race to Become Next Major Ad Network
www.hasoffers.com
on 05/02/2013
Excerpt: eBay recently announced it will follow Google, Amazon, and Facebook’s lead and allow third-party marketers to access eBay’s user data for targeted advertising outside of the eBay ecosystem (i. e. on the third-party’s website). Previously, eBay only used its data for advertising on its own sites. This is a strong signal that eBay views itself as a major player in the lucrative advertising game. The company is positioning itself to extend beyond its role as a premier publisher and transform into a major ad network. It’s a natural step for eBay and its competitors, and one with dollar signs written all over it.... read the full post.

The social network, due to the sheer size of its international userbase, offers unprecedented potential for growing the brand of both an individual and publication. Facebook translates natural language interface under Graph Search
feedproxy.google.com
on 04/29/2013
Excerpt: Facebook continues to reveal more details about the underlying infrastructure of Graph Search, this time with a deep dive on the natural language interface. It's a fairly in-depth piece, and there are plenty of nitty-gritty details available over on the Facebook Engineering blog today. But the gist of the crash course is to offer more insight into how the infrastructure deciphers queries written out in "natural language" (i. e. colloquial, everyday speech -- nothing fancy or even necessarily grammatically correct) and then spits the best possible results back out.... read the full post.

Facebook And The Sudden Wake Up About The API Economy
techcrunch.com
on 04/28/2013
Excerpt: What a two weeks it’s been. Something happened that has been simmering for a while. The API market exploded. Intel bought Mashery for more than $180 million and CA acquired Layer 7. 3Scale received a new $4. 2 million round of funding from Javelin Ventures. Mulesoft acquired Programmable Web. And then Facebook jumped in and bought Parse. The acquisitions and funding point to a maturing market that is reflected in the ubiquity of APIs across the application landscape. It’s not a new market by any means. The space is filled with companies that have leveraged the API build out that has happened over the past several years. Instead this is an inflection point.... read the full post.
