Databases are one of the underlying components that make up the World Wide Web. Databases are following other traditional IT components like compute and storage into the new cloud.
Just like the pre-Internet database era witih players like FoxPro, Access, SQL Server, Oracle and Filemaker Pro, with cloud databases there are many flavors and visions of what a cloud datbase should be.
Whatever the vision might be RESTful web services are playing a critical role for allowing searching, reading and writing of data into these databases.
Web APIs are making databases more open and distributable, as well as breaking data storage away from the relational models that have dominated for the last 20 years.
