Blogging

A blog is a type of website, that is usually maintained by an individual or group of individuals on a wide variety of topics.

The term "weblog" was coined by Jorn Barger in 1997, with the shorter form "blog" coined by Peter Merholz in 1999.  Since blogs have taken on a variety of forms from journals to video blogs.  However blogs often center around a timeline of posts or events, which often resemble a journal.

Many applications and services have risen to meet the growth in blogging, and often provide web site management tools in addition to the traditional chronological posting format.
Blogger was one of the original blogging platforms developed by Pyra Labs, with platforms like LiveJournal popping up to meet demand.  In the recent years newer platforms like Tumblr and Posterous have risen up giving a much more social and mobile face to blogging on the Internet.

The platforms who have dominated have employed APIs to allow deeper integration with their platforms, and enabled these social and mobile features allowing them to virally grow and make blogging the popular form of communication it is today.
